Affectiva Appoints Butler as CRO

US-based emotion measurement specialist Affectiva has appointed former Merkle and Nielsen exec Tom Butler as Chief Revenue Officer.

Tom ButlerFounded in 2009 by Professor Rosalind Picard and research scientist Rana el Kaliouby, in collaboration with the Media Lab at MIT, Affectiva develops software which enables computers to recognize human expressions and deduce emotional and cognitive states.

Butler (pictured) joins from data driven CRM firm Merkle, where he led the Media and Entertainment business development team and helped develop new means of measuring TV promos using set-top-box and digital data. Prior to Merkle he was VP of Audience Development at digital behavioral targeting specialist eXelate. Earlier, he served as the SVP of Sales & Client Services at Nielsen, in charge of the firm's digital practice, and new product developments such as NetEffect, the Nielsen / Facebook partnership measurement solution, along with Nielsen's first online video measurement service. Prior to this, Butler led sales efforts at online measurement start-up NetRatings, which was acquired by Nielsen in 2007.

In his new role, Butler reports to President and CEO Nick Langeveld, who comments: 'Tom's twenty-year track record in media and measurement, market research, emotional analytics, and behavioral targeting - combined with his shared vision and commitment to our strategic plan - puts the company in a strong position for continued global expansion.'
