Revenues - and Costs - Jump at Analytics Firm Splunk

November 26 2014

US analytics software company Splunk has reported a 48% third quarter rise in revenue to $116.0m, primarily driven by strong license sales and maintenance and service revenues. Much higher costs, however, meant operating loss more than trebled to $45.5m.

Godfrey SullivanSan Francisco-based Splunk offers software to collect and harness big data from web sites, apps, servers, networks, sensors and mobile devices. Last year, the firm acquired BugSense, a cloud-based platform for analysing data from hundreds of millions of mobile devices; and machine-generated big data technology firm Cloudmeter.

During the fiscal third quarter ended October 31st, license sales were up 41% to $71.8m on the prior year period, while maintenance and services revenues increased 59.5% to $44.3m. However, expenses of several kinds rose faster than sales - operating expenses by 72.7%, R&D 108.5% to $39.5m, sales and marketing costs up 61.6% to $85.7m, and general and admin expenses up 66% to $21.4m. This led to an operating loss of $45.5m, up from a loss of $13.5m in the prior year quarter, and net loss of $45.8m, compared with $13.9m in the previous Q3.

Chairman and CEO Godfrey Sullivan (pictured) comments: 'This quarter we released new versions of all of our core products, offered new solutions for mobile, wire, mainframe and sensor data, and strengthened our market teams. We welcomed over 500 new customers, saw growth in all of our core markets - with the growth in security especially notable - and we had our best quarter yet with Splunk Cloud.'

For the fiscal fourth quarter, ending January 31st 2015, the company is anticipating total revenues of between $135m and $137m, and for fiscal year 2015, total revenues are expected to be between $438m and $440m.
