Debut for PPM Sports Audience Service

Arbitron's new Sports division has launched a report on radio listening to Pro Football games, team by team. The PPM-based figures cover and compare stats for 25 teams in 23 markets.

The Arbitron Sports Report: PPM Listening for Pro Football covers In Game, Play-by-Play estimates for the 2009-2010 professional football season, allowing advertisers to evaluate the sports play-by-play audience throughout the season and across the US.

2009 professional baseball listening averages will follow in early Spring 2010.

Chris Meinhardt, Arbitron Sports Manager, comments: 'Those teams with play-by-play broadcasts have believed for years radio was an integral part of a fan's experience. Now, thanks to the level of audience detail provided by the PPM ratings service we can see that passion and loyalty with each professional team averaging more than 100,000 listeners for each broadcast.'

Topping the average game audience league were the Chicago Bears with 626,600 listeners; followed by the New York Giants (457,000) and the Philadelphia Eagles (422,400). The games account for a huge share of all listening among Men aged 25-54 - more than 40% in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Boston, Minnesota and Baltimore. Meinhardt says the ratings 'closely resemble those in broadcast television for sporting events' as radio provides unique opportunities for fans 'on the go'.
