Twitter Improves Analytics with Smallthought Buy

In the US, Twitter has acquired analytics firm Smallthought Systems, to offer commercial organizations additional insight into the data collected from its site. Terms were not disclosed.

Andrew Catton and Avi BryantTwitter - which boasts more than 190 million users - previously used Smallthought's Dabble DB online database product to track and share information.

As part of the acquisition, the micro-blogging site will now incorporate Smallthought's Trendly web analytics tool into its own products. This solution offers an analytics dashboard which web site owners use to uncover usage and traffic data that Google Analytics collects about their sites.

Twitter analytics leader Kevin Weil described Trendly as a tool that 'helps web sites distinguish signal from noise in their Google Analytics data'.

The four founders of Vancouver-based Smallthought - Avi Bryant and Andrew Catton, Ben Matasar and Luke Andrews - will join Twitter's analytics team in San Francisco, where they will focus on integrating Trendly features and technology into the firm's existing systems, as well as help develop new products.

'Every day, millions of people use Twitter to create, share and discover information,' Twitter blogged about the Smallthought acquisition. 'As we grow, analytics becomes an increasingly crucial part of improving our service.'
