Big Data Drives SAS Growth

US-based business analytics giant SAS has announced a year of good growth, with a headcount increase of 7.6% in 2011 to date and an anticipated 12% rise in revenue this year.

The company now employs 12,370 and says it is planning to add at least two more buildings to its campus in Cary, North Carolina to accommodate the extra 401staff based there. A large percentage of the new staff are being taken on to support SAS's hosted Solutions OnDemand and Center for Health Analytics and Insights offerings, as well as sales, research and development, and industry intelligence. The firm has also announced a new research centre, the SAS Analytics Lab for State and Local Government, and says it intends to add 100 new technology and government experts over the next two years.

SAS has benefitted from the recent trend in market research and other industries towards 'Big Data' and the need for serious tools for processing and analysing it. It has also moved further into social media monitoring in the last year with the announcement in August of improved competitive intelligence functionality in its Social Media Analytics product.

CEO Jim Goodnight comments: 'As computers process more information at greater speeds, people are realizing the potential hidden in their data. SAS is being asked to answer questions and solve problems that couldn't be answered or solved before. As demand for analytics rises, SAS continues to hire technology, analytics and industry experts to continue innovation and maintain close relationships with our customers. With 35 years of hiring and retaining top talent, no other company has deeper experience in applying 'big analytics' to solve 'big data' problems.'
