Nielsen CEO Joins Monsanto Board

St Louis-based multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotech corporation Monsanto has appointed Nielsen CEO Mitch Barns to its Board of Directors.

Mitch BarnsMonsanto, which employs around 21,000 people and had revenues of US$15.9bn in 2014, describes itself as a sustainable agriculture company with a mission to make 'a balanced meal accessible to everyone'. It is known for the production of genetically engineered (GE) seed and crop protection products such as the herbicide Roundup. Such products, together with its influence in government circles and in global agricultural change have at times embroiled it in controversy.

Barns (pictured) joins Monsanto's Board after nearly twenty years at Nielsen, where he has served as CEO since early 2014. During his time with the company, he has held leadership roles across all major parts of the business, including President, Global Client Service; President of the US Media arm; President of Greater China; and President of the BASES analytic consulting division. He began his career at Procter & Gamble, where he spent twelve years in marketing research and brand management positions. Barns also serves on the Board of Trustees for The Paley Center for Media, and is a member of the American Heart Association CEO Roundtable.

At Monsanto, Barns will serve on both the Science and Technology and Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility committees. Commenting on the appointment, Hugh Grant, Monsanto's Chairman and CEO, stated: 'Mitch Barns' experience with one of the world's leading data analytics companies will enable him to bring valuable perspective to our Board on matters related to operating in a complex and global environment. This includes how we continue to effectively leverage data and insights to deliver a broad range of integrated solutions to help meet the needs of our customers'.
