ANZ Bank Hires First Chief Data Officer

In Sydney, former Woolworths exec Emma Gray has joined Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) as its first Chief Data Officer.

Emma GrayThe business traces its origins to the Bank of Australasia, which opened its first office in Sydney in 1835, and today it operates in more than 34 markets across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Pacific, Europe, America, and the Middle East, with a technology and operations centre in Bengaluru, India. Gray (pictured) joins from Australia's largest retail group Woolworths, where she latterly served as Chief Loyalty and Data Officer, responsible for group loyalty programmes, data analytics strategy, and services businesses. Before this, she worked for sports and leisure retailer Rebel Group as Chief Strategy Officer, and she was a Partner at business consultancy Bain & Company, where she worked for more than fourteen years.

In her new role, Gray will be responsible for the bank's data strategy, including how data is defined, gathered, managed and protected. She reports to Group Executive Digital Banking, Maile Carnegie, who comments: 'As our Chief Data Officer, Emma will play a crucial role in ANZ's digital transformation. How we strategically manage and use our data is fundamental to how we can deliver the best experiences for our customers and build a world class digital bank. Emma will lead the creation of a business intelligence capability for the bank in collaboration with other teams across ANZ to identify the biggest opportunities for us to make better decisions for the bank and our customers'.
