PlaceIQ Buys Skyhook's Geospatial Insights Business

New York-based location intelligence firm PlaceIQ has acquired the Geospatial Insights business from location tech firm Skyhook Wireless. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Duncan McCallAs part of the transaction, PlaceIQ will service Skyhook's existing Geospatial Insights clients, providing access to PlaceIQ location data, fulfilling use cases from commercial foot traffic metrics and consumer segmentation. PlaceIQ will also acquire the rights to Skyhook's data enrichment SDK, through which customers can segment their first-party data with visitation-based consumer behavior data.

Skyhook says the sell-off will enable it to focus on its Precision Location solution, which uses a hybrid of various localization techniques (such as Wi-Fi and cell ID positioning) to calculate device locations. PlaceIQ's latest deal follows its 2020 acquisition of location data and foot traffic measurement business FreckleIOT from off-line media measurement firm Freckle.

Duncan McCall (pictured), CEO, and co-founder of PlaceIQ, comments: 'This past year has really shone a light on the importance of access to real-time, contextual data for decision making. This acquisition will allow us to deepen our focus on delivering superior data solutions, and expand our reach in the maturing data market'.
