Databricks Buys Data Science Firm 8080 Labs

Big data and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions firm Databricks has acquired low code / no code company 8080 Labs, creator of a data science tool that enables data exploration and transformation with a few clicks. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Tobias Krabel and Florian WetschoreckFounded in 2019 by Tobias Krabel and Florian Wetschoreck, Frankfurt, Germany-based 8080 Labs develops tools that make Python accessible to everyone, through both paid and open-source software. The firm's flagship bamboolib solution offers a tool for fast data exploration and transformation.

Databricks, which recently raised $1.6 billion in a Series H round of funding, says the deal will expand its own accessibility to citizen data scientists with simplified UI-based data science and machine learning capabilities integrated directly into its platform. These capabilities will be integrated across Databricks' Lakehouse Platform, enabling anyone with just a very basic understanding of data science to train advanced models on their datasets.

Ali Ghodsi, co-founder and CEO of Databricks, comments: 'We are thrilled to welcome 8080 Labs to the team as we accelerate the adoption and accessibility of lakehouse as the data architecture of the future. We are broadening the focus of our user base to a wider audience that prefers low-code/no-code solutions. Bringing simple capabilities to Databricks is a critical step in empowering more people within an organization to easily analyze and explore large sets of data, regardless of expertise'.
