Australian PC Market Strong
IDC has released preliminary figures showing that the Australian market for PCs reached record levels in the second quarter of 2004. 791,079 units were shipped in the quarter (Desktop and Notebook PCs), representing a solid 8.1% increase from the first quarter of the year.
The desktop market grew by 8.5% sequentially and by 13.5% from the same period last year. This is in comparison to the 7.1% growth the notebook market experienced from Q1 of 2004. Government buying was a strong driver, including the notable Department of Defence tender and the Federal election. After a strong first quarter, there was a very notable deceleration in the education space that could indicate some buying will move into the third quarter of the year.According to Michael Sager, Market Analyst PC Hardware, HP strengthened its hold on the top position, with strong growth especially from the desktop side of the business. 'Dell was the only other vendor able to grow its share among the top 5 with Acer, IBM, and Toshiba each losing ground to the top two vendors. Aside from Optima the majority of the local whitebox vendors gave up share to the multi-national vendors during 2Q 2004'.
