Candidates Level as Convention 'Bounce' Subsides

The 'convention bounce', which showed President Bush ahead of Senator Kerry by 6-11% after the Republican convention in New York, appears to have disappeared according to the latest poll from Harris. The two have almost equal levels of support.

The poll shows Senator Kerry leading by 48% to 47% among likely voters. Harris point out that this small lead is well within the possible sampling error of the survey - 'however, it would be incorrect to label even a one-point lead, as some media have done in the past, a 'statistical dead heat''. Third candidate Ralph Nader is down from 8% in April to just 2% now.

A narrow 51 to 45% majority disagree with the statement that President Bush 'deserves to be re-elected'.

Harris Interactive surveyed 1,018 US citizens aged 18+, including 803 'likely voters', by telephone between September 9 and 13.
