SurveyMonkey and PORES Link for Election Studies

Momentive's research software solution SurveyMonkey has formed a partnership with the Penn Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies (PORES), to understand the driving forces behind the 2022 US midterm elections.

Jon Cohen and John LapinskiPart of the University of Pennsylvania, PORES aims to develop a data-driven approach to understanding political outcomes in the US, using public opinion survey research and poll analysis. With the partnership, the university's undergraduate research program and SurveyMonkey will tap into sentiments from the two million people per day who take surveys on the latter's platform, and the results will inform the NBC News Decision Desk on election night.

The PORES/SurveyMonkey surveys have been designed to help 'pressure test' assumptions about available data and measure the shifting views of the public throughout the midterm election season. They include interviews with more than 300,000 US adults about the election, and detail the top policy and issue concerns driving their voting intentions.

Jon Cohen, Chief Research Officer at Momentive, says the initiative is designed to upgrade polling methodology in order to reassure people that 'scientific surveys can work'. John Lapinski, Faculty Director of PORES, adds: 'This collaboration with SurveyMonkey allows us to further innovate in how we measure the attitudes of Americans in the United States. Our goal is to better understand some of the misses polling has produced over the past several election cycles, so we can produce more accurate results going forward'.
