Biden Calls for Ad Targeting Curbs

In the US, President Joe Biden has called for legislation to protect users' privacy by limiting targeted advertising, and banning it completely for children.

In an article in The Wall Street Journal, Biden accused some social media companies of exploiting users' personal data, and called for legislation to hold them to account. Biden (pictured) is backing a plan to revise part of the Communications Decency Act, which currently protects companies from legal liability for content users post online, and is calling for transparency for the algorithms that tech companies use to target individuals.

'We need serious federal protections for Americans' privacy', he wrote in the article. 'That means clear limits on how companies can collect, use and share highly personal data - your Internet history, your personal communications, your location, and your health, genetic and biometric data'. He added: 'Much of that data shouldn't be collected in the first place'.
