Abt Associates Founder Passes on Chairman's Role

US public policy research firm Abt Associates has announced that John Shane will succeed the company's founder Clark Abt as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Abt will become Chairman Emeritus.

Shane has been active in the venture capital industry since 1961, financing over 100 companies and serving on more than 30 boards - from start-ups to New York Stock Exchange listed corporations. He has been a Director of Abt Associates since 1967 and most recently served as Chairman of both its Audit and Compensation Committees.

Abt founded the company, which now has more than 1,000 employees around the world, in 1965 and served as its President until 1986, when he became Chairman. Abt says his successor has 'the respect and confidence of our Directors, who include distinguished social and biological scientists and entrepreneurs'.

Wendell Knox, the company's President and CEO, says he is looking forward to working with Shane 'to continue to grow Abt Associates and enhance its reputation as a leader in public policy research, international development, clinical research, and business consulting'.

Shane says his focus will be on strategic planning as well as 'improving the processes by which bright young people are hired and provided with clear advancement paths and training, enabling them to enjoy positive and constructive careers at the company'.

Abt Associates provides services to US and foreign governments, international organisations, foundations and businesses. It has offices in the USA, Africa, Asia, Central Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. The company's web site is at www.abtassociates.com .
