TNS Shows Tesco Still Gaining Share

Tesco has again increased its lead in UK supermarket share, although most of its major competitors have also fared well in a growing market, according to TNS WorldPanel data for the 12 weeks ending 13 August.

Market growth of 6% year-on-year is the highest since August 2004. In addition the collapse of the Kwik Save fascia, which has dropped from 1.7% share a year ago to 0.2% now, has contributed to the rise in share for most of the major grocery retailers, according to Edward Garner, Director of Research, TNS WorldPanel.

Tesco's share is up from 30.3% a year ago to 31.6%, the highest absolute climb, although Waitrose and Aldi showed stronger year-on-year growth in percentage terms (12% and 16% respectively).

Among the other major players, Sainsbury's continued its recovery with growth of 8%, the best for several years, lifting its share from 15.7% to 16.0%; while Asda grew 6% year-on-year with a share unchanged at 16.6%; and Somerfield benefited from further fascia changes and the Kwik Save break-up to gain its best share since March 2000, 4.4%.

TNS Worldpanel monitors the household grocery purchasing habits of 20,000 demographically representative households in Great Britain – the above data is based on the value of items being bought by these consumers. Globally, Worldpanel coverage extends to more than 50 countries worldwide with services typically based on continuously monitored samples providing information on purchasing and usage activity.
