UK Supermarkets Continue Growth

UK supermarket sales figures from TNS show another buoyant period – sales are up 6% year-on-year. The stats show good news for most of the major groups, in particular Sainsbury's, Waitrose and – as usual – Tesco.

The 6% figure comes from the latest TNS Worldpanel grocery market share figures, for the 12 weeks ending 10 September. Sales were helped by increased prices for fresh produce and bread, according to Edward Garner, Director of Research at TNS Worldpanel.

Sainsbury continues its strong run with a growth rate of 8% for the second period running, and may win yet higher market share at Christmas, traditionally one of its strong trading periods. Meanwhile Morrisons have clocked up a second period of real sales growth of 4%, which Garner says puts it 'firmly out of the doldrums' despite being behind the overall market growth – its market share remains close to 11%.

Tesco has added another 1.3 share points year-on-year, with 'the brunt of the suffering being borne by Kwik Save which has all but disappeared', according to Garner. Waitrose achieved a record share of 3.9%, helped by the integration of recent acquisitions.

Store extensions and acquisitions give Aldi the strongest performance among the Discounters.

TNS Worldpanel monitors the household grocery purchasing habits of 20,000 demographically representative households in Great Britain - the above data is based on the value of items they buy. TNS is online at www.tns-global.com .
