Census Bureau Stats Chief Joins Arbitron

Audience measurement firm Arbitron has appointed Al Tupek as its Chief Statistical Officer (CSO). Tupek is former Chief of the US Census Bureau's Demographic Statistical Methods Division.

Tupek has more than 32 years of experience in designing surveys and managing statistical programs at the Census Bureau as well as at the National Science Foundation and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most recently, he was chief of the Demographic Statistical Methods Division and chair of the Methodology and Standards Council at the Census Bureau, where he managed statistical methods for more than thirty national household surveys. He also has led interdisciplinary teams of statisticians, econometricians, behavioral scientists and computer specialists in improving the statistical information produced by federal agencies and widely used in national, state and local policy decisions.

He holds a master's degree in statistics from the University of Connecticut and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of New Hampshire. Based in the Company's Columbia, Maryland, office, Tupek will report directly to Chief Research Officer RO Bob Patchen, who comments: 'Al is extremely qualified and well prepared for this new role. He has been a thought leader on the front lines of survey research for the past three decades, which have been critical formative years in our field.'
