Nielsen Date for VOD Launch

Nielsen Media Research (NMR) will launch a service to measure nationally distributed Video On Demand (VOD) content, on December 11th. The service will use the National People Meter sample used for television ratings, and 'watermark' content for detection by its new Active/Passive meter.

Clients will receive household and demographic ratings for VOD content along with other detailed audience information, allowing a comparison for the first time traditional channel and on demand performance of the same programs.

Nielsen has developed a system of unique 'watermarks' for VOD content so that its newly deployed Active/Passive meter can accurately identify on-demand viewing sessions.

Scott L Brown, Senior Vice President of Nielsen, says that with VOD growing and potentially a valuable new revenue stream for programmers, they need to understand who is watching their shows and to compare audiences with those for traditional television. 'With this launch, we continue to 'follow the video' wherever it is broadcast, while fulfilling a commitment we made to clients who told us last year that VOD measurement was a major priority for them. Nielsen will be working with clients to make sure they install our watermarking technology so we can identify both their library content and their new, recently presented programs shown via VOD.'
