Lack of Staff Prompts Macro's Call Centre Closure

infoUSA-owned Macro International is to close its 60 seat St Albans, Vermont call centre at the end of the month, because it has been unable to recruit sufficient staff to warrant upgrading the facility with the latest software and communications innovations.

Explained SVP James Dayton: 'If we could have gotten enough people to work there, we would have upgraded the St Albans facility.' Dayton added that the company would have liked to have employed more than 120 part-time workers in the facility, more than tripling numbers.

The decision will result in 35 part-time and six full-time employees being offered redundancy, a transfer to one of the firm's other locations in Burlington or Plattsburgh, or the opportunity to work from home.

The other centres recently received $1 million in upgrades. Burlington employs about 205 people, while Plattsburgh has approximately 414 full and part-time employees. To work from home, Dayton says that employees will need a private workplace and a computer.

A year ago, infoUSA split its recently acquired Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) into two groups: government research under the name Macro International and corporate MR with the existing name (www.mrweb.com/drno/news6264.htm ).
