Northern Light Upgrades to Extract Meaning

US-based research portal provider Northern Light has upgraded its MI Analyst 'meaning extraction' application to analyse search results and automatically extract meaning from internal and research documents, secondary research, news stories and web sources.

Version 2.0 also includes a facility to improve the value of search results based on the proximity of specified terms or phrases to each other, and to any of the terms held in MI Analyst.

The firm says that its solution combines free-text searching with advanced text analytics to identify the strategy issues and business implications of the analysed content.

Users can now click on a Business Issue (events, trends, and situations such as falling prices, shifting market share, emerging market trends) or Strategic Scenario (competitive interactions and plans for companies discussed in the research material being analysed) to be automatically directed to a search results list that contains information about their choice.

Said CEO, David Seuss. 'Professionals who use market intelligence and research databases in any industry trying to cope with and drive change, will find that MI Analyst is a highly intelligent, computerised assistant that surfaces the golden nuggets of meaning in their research databases.'

The updated tool expands beyond its original IT sector focus to the pharma industry and can also be used to analyse news, published syndicated research and specialty databases of particular interest to this market.

MI Analyst reads available news articles as well as all the market intelligence and research reports that a company creates or licenses from third-party sources. In addition, it can discern the tone of content - for example, assessing which market research reports and research analysts reflect a positive sentiment and which demonstrate a negative sentiment about a company and its competitors.

The system is available through Northern Light's SinglePoint portals, which provide centralised search, analysis and access to market intelligence. In December, the firm added more than 1,600 IT industry-oriented blogs to SinglePoint, to help professionals stay up-to-date with the 'buzz' that blogs generate (www.mrweb.com/drno/news7707.htm ).

Founded in 1996, Northern Light is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts and has a development centre in St Petersburg, Russia. Web site: www.northernlight.com.
