Royal Mail Wants Former TNS Chair for Top Job

The UK's Royal Mail has named former TNS Chairman Donald Brydon as first choice to lead it through a forthcoming part-privatisation. If appointed, he would replace current Chairman Allan Leighton when he steps down in March.

It is understood that Royal Mail is waiting to get the thumbs up from Business Secretary Lord Mandelson for the approach to Brydon, who chaired Taylor Nelson Sofres until it was taken over by marcoms giant WPP last year.

If Brydon does replace Leighton, he is expected to lead the group through the sale of a minority stake to Dutch group TNT or DHL: however, he is said to be in talks with several companies about different posts, and is not certain to want the Royal Mail role.

Brydon took his job with TNS after a 20-year career at Barclays' investment division. He also chairs the Smiths engineering group and the London Metal Exchange, and was a director at the Allied Domecq drinks group and Scottish Power before they were taken over. He graduated in mathematical science from the University of Edinburgh in 1967.
