UK Internet Users Concentrated in 'the Big Smoke'
7/6/00

According to new data from MMXI Europe, the UK's Internet population is concentrated in the capital city and the South, accounting for 31.7% of the total.

London alone accounts for 22.7% of the UK's Internet population. In April, 9.6 million of the 60 million people living in the UK went online.

The Internet is less popular in the North East, with just 4.5% of the total. East Anglia and other eastern counties make up just 7.1% of Internet users.

In London, the Midlands, the East, the North East and North West, Yahoo.com is the number one site by reach. In the South, Microsoft.com comes top, whilst Freeserve.co.uk is the favourite site for people logging on in Yorkshire. Microsoft.com is the favourite site in Wales and the West in Scotland and the Borders.

According to Mari Kim Coleman, UK Managing Director for MMXI Europe, "It is interesting to see which sites are popular in which regions, and how the Internet population mirrors the UK population. This information shows how the Internet has reached all regions of the UK and the population is growing all the time. As advertising is affected by regionality, this detail will be particularly useful for advertisers and media planners and buyers."

Between January and April, the UK Internet population grew by 1.8 million users from 7.8 million to 9.6 million unique visitors in April. 52.4% of UK Internet users in April were men, 34.8% women and 12.8% children aged between 2-14.
