Polling the world with The Planet Project 24/10/00 Harris Interactive and the 3Com Corp are due to launch their ‘Your Voice, Your World’ poll online on November 15. Designed to allow participants to share and compare their beliefs and opinions in real-time, this is believed to be the largest four day Net research survey to date. According to Gordon Black, chairman and CEO of Harris Interactive "the Planet Project is the biggest opportunity our world has ever had to understand our differences and similarities. We applaud the world's digital and non-digital citizens who are willing to share their opinions in the spirit of fun and discovery." Some 500 "Planet Pollsters" will be equipped with the laptops, modems, handheld devices and portable transmitters required to join in. In addition, over 2,000 people from 3Com will log onto the survey through public access, such as cyber cafes, whilst a number of teenagers will also participate though the "Student Underground" section. Harris Interactive carried out the original research needed to construct the poll’s 1,000 questions. Commenting on this exercise, Gordon Black has noted that "Given the global nature of the project and the cultural differences within and across countries, it was extremely challenging to develop questions that were compelling to most people." Harris research analysts around the world will work solidly over the four day period to interpret the results as they arrive. The end product should, in the words of Bruce Claflin, president and COO of 3Com, be "an incredible opportunity to show how simple to use networking technology can be a powerful tool for research and information gathering."
