Happy with Health Care?
20/2/01

Do you think you enjoy the benefits of a good healthcare system? If you are a Dutch person, you probably think you do. But if, on the other hand, you are a Russian, you will probably think quite the opposite. These are the top line findings from a new Harris Interactive survey, which looked at how public attitudes toward healthcare systems vary across six countries (Argentina, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Russia and the United States).

The study was conducted by the Harris Interactive Global Network members in the individual countries. Overall, the results reveal that:

  • The Dutch are the most satisfied with their health care system.
  • The Russians are the least satisfied.
  • Some 45% of Russians believe they need to "completely rebuild" their system. Only 6% think it works "pretty well."
  • This compares starkly to the Netherlands, where only 13% believe they need to "completely rebuild" their system.
  • Some 33% of the Dutch also believe the system "works pretty well."

The study ran during the summer and autumn of 2000. The results have also been combined with data from the 1998 Harris Interactive research conducted for the Harvard School of Public Health and the Commonwealth Fund.
