What is the Census All About?
18/4/01

The Census and Geodemographics Group of The Market Research Society (MRS) is to host a Census Briefing on 28 June in London. Aimed primarily at market researchers and marketers, the event is designed to enable users to get the most out of the 2001 Census of Population.

The 2001 Census - to be held on 29 April - will provide unprecedented detail about the UK’s current population, down to neighbourhood level.

The briefing will be provided by a range of high-profile industry experts from the Office for National Statistics, Demographic Decisions, Birkbeck College, Target Market Consultancy, and Marks & Spencer. It will be chaired by Barry Leventhal, Head of Analysis and Modelling at NCR, who also chairs The MRS Census and Geodemographics Group.

A range of topics will be addressed during the briefing including new developments for 2001, Census output and data dissemination, as well as Census and market research. In addition, Steven Bond from Marks & Spencer will provide an overview of how the retailer will make use of the 2001 Census.

Barry Leventhal commented "This briefing will gather together a unique group of experts with a commercial perspective on the potential applications of the 2001 Census. The first census of the new millennium will be a major milestone."

Keith Dugmore, MRS member and speaker at the event, commented "This year’s Census has several major innovations, including new questions and the use of postal geography, and dissemination of the results will be revolutionised. These developments will open up new opportunities for market researchers and other users in thousands of commercial companies."
