ASC Conference on Internet Survey Research
4/5/01

The importance of the Internet to survey research is becoming undeniable. In recognition of this fact, the Association for Survey Computing (ASC) is running a two day, residential conference entitled "The Challenge of the Internet" on May 11th and 12th.

The event promises to provide an in-depth look at the impact and uses of the net, from data capture through to final dissemination. It will draw on the combined forces of the ASC, the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the Market Research Society (MRS) and the Social Research Association (SRA).

In terms of subject coverage, delegates can expect to benefit from four half-day sessions, each with an invited keynote speaker and three other contributed papers. For maximum benefit, these proceedings will be prepared and distributed as a volume to delegates in advance of the conference.

The programme as confirmed so far runs as:

  • Session 1, organised by the MRS on "Designing on-line studies to maximum advantage." The keynote speech will be given by Ray Poynter on "A Guide to Best Practice in Online Quantitative Research."
  • Session 2, organised by the SRA on "Sampling and Instrumentation Issues." The keynote speech will be given by Mick P. Couper on "The Promises and Perils of Web Surveys."
  • Session 3, organised by the ONS on "Dissemination of Statistical Information." The keynote will be given by Len Cook on "Seizing Opportunities to Inform the Information Society: Creating Value from Statistics through Exploiting New Technologies."
  • Session 4, organised by the ASC on "Integration through Software and Metadata." The keynote will be given by Chris Nelson on "The Effect of Standards on Software Component Architecture."
