Dwindling Support for Bush on Iraq

American public support for policies on Iraq is steadily declining, according to the latest Harris Poll. A two-to-one majority (51% to 25%) now says they are not confident that US policies in Iraq will be successful, and support for the President's handling of the crisis is down to 41% positive, 58% negative from roughly 50/50 in July.

More than half now say that the level of US casualties is unacceptable, while only 44% are prepared to describe them as 'unfortunate but acceptable'. The majority favoring the handing over of control to the UN has strengthened, with 53% supporting and only 29% opposing.

A 49% to 37% plurality still thinks that taking military action against Iraq was 'the right thing to do', but even this is down from 55% vs 32% in September.

Harris Interactive(r) surveyed 2,056 adults between October 21 and 27, before the shooting down of a US Chinook helicopter on November 2 which may have further undermined support for current policies.
