Disapproval for Mexican Visitor

A poll in Greater Mexico City by Indemerc Harris Interactive, coinciding with George Bush's visit, has found that just over half its inhabitants support NAFTA. However, the great majority disapprove of Bush, feel that the US does best out of NAFTA and dislike the presence of US security agents at Mexican airports.

While 52% approve of the fact that Mexico is a member of the North American Free Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada, 44% disapprove. Only 10% feel that Mexico benefits most from the agreement, with 5% opting for Canada and 83% for the US.

Only 24% approve of the presence of US security agents at Mexican airports although a larger proportion - 43% - feel safer as a result. Not surprisingly, no more than 25% would approve of American agents performing 'any other police or inspection work in Mexico' with 73% opposed.

Asked whether they approve or disapprove of 'the way the President of the United States of America, George Bush governs', 82% disapproved and only 11% approved, with 7% undecided.

Indemerc Harris Interactive interviewed 800 adults aged 18+ in Greater Mexico City, by telephone, on January 8th and 9th. Results were weighted to be representative of all adults in Mexico City. Indemerc has been part of the Harris Interactive Global Network since 1993.
