IPA Agency Census | February 6 2002 |
The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising in the UK has just released its 2001 Agency Census, perceived as the only definitive survey of marketing and communications companies in the country.
The main points of the survey include:
- As at 1st September 2001 it is estimated that there were 14,000 individuals employed in IPA member agencies. However, the average size of an IPA member agency declined year-on-year from 69 to 67.
- Advertising and marketing communications continues to be a young industry with 49% of all staff 30 years or under and 81% under the age of 40. Just under half of board directors are aged 31-40, whilst just under a third are aged 41-50.
- Just over half, 58%, of total IPA companies are based in London and account for 78% of total staff; 42% of IPA member companies are based in the North West, Scotland and the Midlands and account for 22% of total staff.
- Women make up 49% of the industry, 23% of board directors and 12% of chairman/CEOs/managing directors; 16.6% of women are involved within creative departments.
- 26% of the employed base are involved in the creative function of their agencies, while 23% are involved in account handling and 16% in media departments.
