In the UK, publisher Guardian News & Media has appointed former Daily Telegraph Senior Data Journalist Ashley Kirk as Visual Projects Editor at The Guardian newspaper.
The Guardian's 'Datablog' was launched in 2009, and has since published thousands of stories and datasets on a wide variety of topics. The team comprises data editors and journalists who publish data in a visual format designed for easy use.
Kirk (pictured) will join next week after more than five years at the Telegraph, latterly working on special projects including writing data-based stories and creating visualisations for the web site and print; scraping and cleaning data as a method for sourcing stories; and building data-driven tools for the newsroom. He joined the newspaper in 2015 as a Data Journalist. Earlier, he was an online reporter for City AM, having begun his career at The Guardian as a freelance journalist. In addition, Kirk is a visiting lecturer at City University of London, teaching students on the Introduction to Data Journalism module.
Commenting on the move, Kirk said: 'I've had a brilliant five years at The Telegraph, with a team that's made data journalism a crucial part of the news offering. I'm very proud of everything we've achieved. Very excited for new challenges and opportunities with The Guardian. I've admired their work for a long time and, even though it's a strange time to be moving jobs, I can't wait to get going'.
