Abt Names New President and CEO

US-based healthcare and government researcher Abt Associates has promoted Kathleen Flanagan to the position of President and CEO, succeeding Wendell Knox who is to retire from the post he has held for the past 17 years.

Kathleen FlanaganFounded in 1965, Abt employs more than 1,300 people and generates annual revenues of approximately $264m from global operations in domestic public policy research, international economic development, survey research and consulting, and clinical research.

Flanagan joined in 1983 as a Policy Analyst in the Health Area, and since that time has worked across a broad range of markets and policy areas. In 1989, she became Managing VP of the Labor Economics Research Area, and in the mid-90s she and her education colleagues launched an International Workforce and Education Practice. In 1998, she launched the Housing and Community Revitalization practice and built a team comprising more than 75 researchers and technical staff.

Since 2001, she has been a member of the firm's senior executive team, working since 2005 as Group Vice President in charge of the firm's Social, Economic and Health Policy unit, which generates more than $100m in annual revenue and employs around 300 staff. She has a BA in Economics and Master of Science in Public Policy from the University of Rochester in New York.

'I am delighted that Kathleen was chosen unanimously by the Board,' commented Chairman John Shane. 'We believe she has the leadership skills, industry and policy knowledge, and strategic and operational experience to lead our growing and multi-faceted business.'

Flanagan will assume her new position on October 1, and Knox will continue to serve on the company's Board of Directors.
