Hispanic Polling Service Launches in US

In the US, Ipsos and Spanish language media firm Telemundo have launched a poll to find out more about the attitudes and opinions of Hispanic citizens.

For the first wave of the new Ipsos-Telemundo Poll, more than 500 Hispanics living in the US were interviewed by telephone via Ipsos' US Hispanic Omnibus, managed by the firm's recently launched Hispanic Research Center.

The first poll focused on the 2010 Census, a topic Telemundo has highlighted through its Hazte Contar! public awareness campaign, aimed at educating Hispanics on the importance of participation. The Census Bureau is also spending heavily on advertising to encourage Hispanics to take part. The most recent Census in 2000 counted more than 286 million residents - this year, the count is expected to exceed 310 million.

In the new survey, almost 9 in 10 (88%) poll respondents agree that it is important that everyone in the US is counted in the 2010 Census, and 81% agree that it is their duty to do so.

The proportion of those who have never heard of the Census is slightly higher among Hispanics than it is among the US population at large (18% vs 11%). Furthermore, the proportion of those who have heard of it, but know nothing more about it, is also higher among Hispanics than it is among the total US population (31% vs 23%).
