ANOP to Close after 40 Years

In Australia, veteran pollster Rod Cameron is closing his market research and polling firm ANOP Research Services, after nearly 40 years in business.

ANOP (Australian National Opinion Polls) has offered qual and quant, ad hoc and tracking research since it was founded in 1971. During the 1980s, the firm provided the Australian Labor Party with research and advice, and worked on more than 50 state and federal elections.

But in the 1990s, the agency bowed out of political research, since when, it has focused on providing research and strategic advice to firms operating in the service sector, as well as monitoring Australian community and consumer attitudes.

In a report published in Australian magazine The Age, Cameron and ANOP Partner Margaret Gibbs said they are retiring from the business.

'For 40 years I've been using that side of the brain that says how to take advantage of something, how to prosecute a case, how to defuse a delicate situation,' explained Cameron. 'I haven't been using that side of the brain that's about learning and creating and generosity of spirit, and I'd like to find that part of the brain, which I hope is still there.'

ANOP is currently run by Cameron, Gibbs, MD Peter Harrington and Director Amanda Hicks. At the time of going to press, it was unclear what the remaining partners are planning to do in the future.
