Affectiva Keeps Watch on Consumer Emotions

US technology firm Affectiva has converted its Q Sensor wearable biosensor into a wristwatch, which measures the physical components of emotions including excitement, stress, fear, engagement, boredom and relaxation.

Affectiva's watchFacial recognition and emotion measurement specialist Affectiva was founded in 2009 by two scientists, with the aim of using understanding of consumer emotions to improve products and experiences.

The firm was recently awarded a grant to develop an online version of its Affdex facial expression recognition software, which enables computers to recognize human expressions and deduce emotional and cognitive states.

Q Sensor measures electrodermal activity - also called skin conductance or galvanic skin response (GSR) - along with motion and temperature. Unlike wired sensors that require lab settings, the tool can be used in natural settings over days or months.

Version 1.0, which comes in a wristwatch-style unit, includes a hardened case, 24-hour battery life and storage for three months of data.
