MRS Seeks Input to Online Privacy Paper

In the UK, the Market Research Society (MRS) is seeking input for a new white paper, 'Online Data Collection and Privacy', which aims to set out legal and ethical parameters in this area and clarify the market research sector's standpoint.

Geoff GoslingGeoff Gosling, Chair of the MRS Market Research Standards Board (MRSB) says the new initiative has been driven by continuing high public concern about these issues, as well as the impact they can have on the research sector.

'It is essential that we promote the benefits of properly-conducted online research and offer the sector best practice guidelines based on expert opinions and experience,' Gosling states. 'We are eager to hear people's views as a precursor to MRS drafting new guidelines for online data collection. The more people that take part, the more comprehensive view we will have.'

The paper can be accessed at www.mrs.org.uk/standards/consultation.htm and respondents have until Friday 16 September to submit their contributions by e-mailing codeofconduct@mrs.org.uk .

Comments are invited on what MRSB sees as the key areas:
  • Expectations of users and terms of use
  • The laws of privacy, copyright and data protection
  • The principle of voluntary participation.
MRSB's response will be published in the autumn.
