NatCen to Study Motives Behind UK Riots

In a move bound to raise a few eyebrows, the Cabinet Office has commissioned The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) to study the motives behind those involved in the recent UK riots.

NatCen's researchers are based in Tottenham, Peckham and Clapham in London, as well as Salford and Birmingham. They will also visit two areas unaffected by the riots, in an attempt to understand why there was no trouble in those places.

The study will set out the views of young people involved or affected by the riots, while also gathering views of young people based in areas where the riots didn't take place.

Additionally, it will collect the views of residents, parents, business owners and community leaders on what they think led to the riots and why young people became involved.

NatCen CEO Penny Young comments: 'The riots in English cities in August shocked the nation. Our research which is now underway will bring experiences and views direct to senior policy makers.'
