BARB Web TV Meter 'Ready to Scale Up'

UK broadcasting measurement body BARB is to expand the circulation of its Web TV meter, adding another 500 homes to its core panel, currently just 100-strong. The system measures TV viewing via laptops and PCs.

The body says the initial test has proven the system works and is ready to roll out - it adds: 'The task is now to scale up production, and agree and implement reporting formats with the industry.' Meanwhile it is developing a version which will transfer the capability to tablet devices. The panel is operated by Kantar Media Audiences.

CEO Bjarne Thelin comments: 'Once rolled out, the web-TV meter will take reported viewing beyond the TV set and enable BARB to maximise reporting from our panel. It should also allow us to align panel reporting with other (server) data sets in future, potentially opening the door to develop ways to integrate such data into the BARB system.'

BARB is a not-for-profit limited company owned by BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BSkyB and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising. Oline at www.barb.co.uk , it provides in-home TV viewing measurement for the UK, based on around 11,500 viewers in a panel of 5,100 homes.
