Looker Launches with $2m Funding

After nearly a year in stealth mode, Santa Cruz, CA-based Looker Data Sciences has launched a query-based business intelligence software platform called Looker, with $2m in funding.

Lloyd TabbThe platform employs a new proprietary modeling Language called LookML to open up an organisation's data to employees at all levels, for detailed analytics. As well as asking questions and analyzing the response, Looker can be used to browse, graph and export data into an SQL database, to make cross-functional data accessible to the entire organization.

Funding has been led by First Round Capital and PivotNorth Capital with support from Looker co-founder and serial technology entrepreneur Lloyd Tabb (pictured).

'Previous BI tools are like trying to navigate SQL with a compass and sextant - Looker is the GPS,' Tabb claims. 'We're huge believers in the power of SQL for analytics, but current business intelligence tools don't empower it to be great. They are either too focused on static or parameterized dashboards, or are complex and laborious, requiring an army of engineers to implement.'
