Ireland's Analytics Insight Centre Names New CEO

The Insight Centre for Data Analytics - a joint initiative between University College Dublin, the National University of Ireland at Galway, University College Cork, and Dublin City University - has appointed Oliver Daniels as Chief Executive Officer. He will join on 21st October.

Oliver DanielsHe replaces Professor Barry Smyth, who has held the role since Insight's launch.

The Centre, which was established in 2013 by Science Foundation Ireland with funding of EUR 75m, works with industry partners to develop next-generation data acquisition and analytics solutions. It has brought together more than 200 researchers, who focus on a broad range of data analytics technologies, from machine learning, decision analytics and social media network analysis to linked data and the 'sensor web'.

Daniels (pictured) joins after nearly five years at business communications specialist Avaya, where he served as R&D Leader, prior to which he led a team of more than 500 R&D professionals at Nortel (acquired by Avaya in 2009). During his career, he has also served as CEO of Accendo Technologies, VP EMEA at ADC, and initially at Nortel, where he led a business management and technology group based in Galway.

Commenting on the appointment, John Tracey, Chairman of the Insight Governance Board, said: 'As the largest publicly funded research project in Ireland, Insight's success critically depends on further deepening the close co-operation between industry and the universities. Oliver's extensive industry and R&D experience, at the highest level, will allow Insight to achieve further success.'
