New Index Provides Sound Basis for App Testing

In London, mobile app quality specialist Perfecto Mobile has launched the Mobile Test Coverage Index, a benchmarking service to help app developers and marketers test their products on the most appropriate devices and systems.

The firm's cloud-based 'Continuous Quality Lab' allows users to improve the quality of apps and speed their arrival on the market, via an 'exhaustive' selection of real mobile devices connected to live networks around the world. Perfecto says that in the highly fragmented mobile world, non-tested and poorly tested apps can have a 'devastating' impact on a brand. The new Index seeks to answer the vital first question, 'what devices should I begin testing on?', depending on the target audience of the client.

The Index aggregates 360,000 hours of exclusive Perfecto customer usage data, market data, and future device release timelines to create a list of the 32 most relevant devices, with options for reaching 30 percent, 50 percent and 80 percent test coverage in North America, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. Selections cover five key choices: device model, screen size, GA date, hardware system and recommended operating system, and the number and selection of devices in each test bracket will vary from quarter to quarter to reflect changes in the mobile market.

Current research indicates that 30 percent of the market can be covered with 10-16 devices; 50 percent with 17-25 devices and 80 percent with 26-32 devices. The firm's SVP, Products and Strategy Roi Carmel, comments: 'The first question both business and technical executives alike ask when building a mobile testing strategy relates to coverage. A relevant device and environment mix offers strong test coverage, getting the organization much closer to the true end user experience. It is challenging to achieve desired test coverage for mobile end-user profiles in today's rapidly expanding ecosystem, especially since a mobile device's shelf-life is around nine months'.
