ICO Brings in Former EU Data Protection Supervisor

In the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has appointed former European Data Protection Supervisor Peter Hustinx as a non-executive Director.

Peter HustinxThe ICO is the independent regulatory office dealing with the Data Protection Act 2018 and the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) across the UK. It has recently been involved in high profile cases including the issuance of a maximum £500k fine to Facebook, for failing to protect users' personal information in the recent Cambridge Analytica (CA) data breach.

Hustinx (pictured) was the first European Data Protection Supervisor and served in the role for more than a decade. He previously served as a Director of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and the Centre for Democracy & Technology (CDT) in Washington DC. He has been influential in the development of data protection law, having served as President of the Dutch Data Protection Authority from 1991 until 2004 and as Chairman of the EU's Article 29 Working Party of data protection authorities from 1996 until 2000.
