Spread of US Internet Access Not Slowing

Nearly three in four Americans (204.3 million) now have Internet access from home, according to the latest from Nielsen//NetRatings. This is up from just under two thirds in February 2003, demonstrating that the 'Net continues to grow at staggering speed.

In the words of Kenneth Cassar, director of strategic analysis, Nielsen//NetRatings, 'In just a handful of years, online access has managed to gain the type of traction that took other media decades to achieve'.

Women now represent the majority of users, according to Nielsen//NetRatings. For example, eighty-two percent or 34.6 million women between the ages of 35-54 access the Internet at home, vs only 80% (just under 32.4m) among men in this age group. In the 25-34 age group, seventy-seven percent of women have home access and 75.6 percent of men.

'Women make the majority of purchases and household decisions, so it's no surprise that they are utilizing the Internet as a tool for daily living', says Cassar.
