Nunwood Presents...

UK-based research consultancy Nunwood has introduced drama workshops for its quallies, in a bid to escape the traditional research failing of uninspiring client presentations.

MD Clare Bruce decided that Nunwood's presentations would have more impact with a little coaching from a theatre and drama consultant. 'We are experts at information and insight gathering. But we also need to constantly challenge ourselves to ensure that the delivery of these insights is inspirational for our audience. Too much training for our qualitative team seems to lack the personal touch. All too often the standard training packages focus upon the theoretical 'group dynamic' issues and do not help in developing skills that help engage the audience and their often widely differing needs'.

Bruce therefore approached Ceri Hunter, a theatre and drama consultant, and arranged a series of drama workshops for the qualitative team at Nunwood. This will now become part of an on-going personnel development programme.

The workshops should help with other parts of the researcher's role too, from moderating a group of ASDA shoppers to debriefing global segmentation studies to CEOs. The drama instructor coaches the team in delivery, presentation skills, speech and movement to create a more impressive and lively presentation style.

Satisfaction with the arrangement is mutual. According to Hunter, the Nunwood delegates were a joy to teach, and showed enthusiasm and commitment, while Clare Bruce describes the experience as 'a fun day with real business objectives and genuine benefit for the client. Anything that helps to improve our communication skills must be good'.
