Databricks Buys NLP Query Specialist Einblick

US-based big data and AI solutions firm Databricks has acquired natural language-based data collaboration platform Einblick

Emanuel ZgraggenSan Francisco-based Databricks operates the Lakehouse platform, which brings together data, analytics and AI/machine learning to help clients govern, manage and derive insights from enterprise data and build their own generative AI solutions. In September the company announced Series I funding of more than $500m, valuing the company at $43bn.

Einblick was founded in 2019 by researchers from MIT and Brown University including Emanuel Zgraggen and Philipp Eichmann, and tapped their work in machine learning, human-computer interaction and NLP. Since then the team says it has built 'an AI-native collaboration platform that helps users solve data problems with just one sentence'. This combines application of generative modeling capabilities with their optimization for data-related questions - including understanding not only of general questioning language but also 'the jargon and semantic information specific to each company'.

Zgraggen, Eichmann and the team will now join Databricks. The company says the move aids its evolution into a 'Data Intelligence Platform' which combines easy access to insights and information for non-expert users with much faster work for experts.

CEO Zgraggen (pictured) comments: 'When we founded Einblick, our goal was to empower companies to do more with data, by creating the easiest and most collaborative data platform. Today marks a significant milestone as we join forces with Databricks to further our mission. I am thrilled to embark on this new journey with a company whose mission is to simplify and democratize data and AI'.
