Census Committees Disbanded
The U.S. Commerce Department has today officially terminated a number of federal advisory bodies, including the 2030 Census Advisory Committee, the Bureau of the Census Scientific Advisory Committee, and the Census Bureau National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations.
The closure is part of the Trump administration's drive for 'more efficient government' and was carried out in accordance with Executive Order (E.O.) 14217, 'Commencing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy.'
A coalition of groups, led by The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, had written to Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick a month ago expressing its concerns about the terminations. They described the committees' elimination as 'a major setback at a pivotal moment for the bureau, both in its planning for the 2030 Census and its extensive efforts to streamline and modernize other data collection activities to eliminate duplication, contain costs, and improve data accuracy and usefulness.' The letter urged the Secretary to 'reverse this decision or, at minimum, commit to immediately establishing a robust, transparent, and inclusive alternative structure that preserves the value these committees brought to the Census Bureau's work.'
