Wiley Hires AI and Data Chief

New Jersey-based research and education publishing company Wiley has appointed Armughan Rafat as Chief AI and Data Services Officer, with a focus on developing and commercializing AI-ready content and data products for developers and corporate R&D teams.

Armughan RafatWiley was founded in 1807 and currently describes itself as 'a global leader in research, publishing and knowledge solutions... dedicated to the creation and application of knowledge'. The company says it has generated nearly $100 million in AI licensing revenue since January 2024, and in the past year has partnered with four of the leading AI firms; launched interactive research intelligence platform Wiley's AI Gateway; signed subscription licensing agreements with 'multiple R&D intensive corporations' in sectors including pharma and energy; and expanded its established spectral database collection, used in government and corporate labs worldwide.

Rafat (pictured) brings experience of building businesses and capabilities that convert content assets into predictive data and AI services. He joins from Norstella, where as Chief Analytics Officer he drove AI-powered innovation in pharma and healthcare. Earlier he was Chief Data Officer at Clarivate, delivering intelligence products for life sciences, pharma, financial and legal markets. He has also held leadership positions at the Advertising Specialty Institute and Thomson Reuters, co-founded and sold an ad tech startup, and holds patents for AI and analytics technologies.

In his new role he joins Wiley's Executive Leadership Team, and reports to President and CEO Matt Kissner, who comments: 'Armughan is joining us at an extraordinary time in our trajectory as AI-related demand for our must-have content and data accelerates across industry verticals.
