Nielsen to Phase in DASH, Other Updates This Month

Nielsen has shared details of enhancements it is making to its ad currency methodology, in advance of the fall broadcast TV season. The changes relate in part to the integration of data from the ARF's accredited DASH universe estimates, which were originally scheduled for launch in March this year.

Karthik RaoThe DASH TV Universe Study, driven by the ARF (Advertising Research Foundation) and accredited by standards body the MRC in January, provides comprehensive estimates of consumer television footprints across connections, services and devices. Nielsen had planned to integrate DASH into its own reporting for The Gauge - which gives share of market for all broadcast, cable and streaming consumption via a television screen - from February data onwards. However, as the deadline approached, the firm decided the move would be delayed, and a few days later it wrote to clients saying the January data methodology would continue until further changes had been made, in the fall.

Nielsen's stated reason for this was a desire to wait until other changes in process - including HDAM modeling, integrated weighting and co-viewing - are ready to go live, and introduce them all in one go, minimising disruption and simplifying comparability. Unnamed sources quoted in the Wall Street Journal, however, said at the time that the new data showed the streaming companies had been growing their market share more slowly than previously suggested, resulting in pressure from the streamers to put off the integration.

Whatever the truth of that, this week's announcement lists a large number of enhancements, developed in consultation with clients. They include improved data on co-viewing:, using watch-like measurement devices worn on the wrists of Nielsen panelists; enhancements based on HDAM (Household Demographic Assignment Model), a machine-learning tool used to determine the demographic makeup of households from Big Data providers; an improved weighting process to combine panel and Big Data more effectively; better estimates of the Spanish-language universe, tapping data from the American Community Survey and the National Hispanic Enumeration Survey; and updates to ACR Monitored Tuning and household grouping methodology.

Nielsen's announcement this week also discusses the DASH addition, stating: 'While Nielsen adopted the ARF's DASH Universe Estimates into its currency earlier in 2026, this enhancement improves accuracy by fixing timing delays in survey data. Universe estimates are, as the name implies, an approximation of the total number of households or persons in a particular category - in this case, media consumption capabilities of US homes. While previous DASH UEs were based on survey data from 2024, Nielsen is now adjusting these UEs to reflect more recent trends in consumer behavior.'

Taken together, the company says the changes 'make Big Data + Panel currency measurement more accurate than ever before.' CEO Karthik Rao comments: 'We are relentless in our pursuit of delivering the most accurate measurement possible for our media and advertising clients. We've spent months working hand in hand with them and industry experts to make Big Data + Panel even more accurate.' The changes will be incorporated from August 31st.
