YouTube Measurement Change
From today, 24th August, YouTube will count a video as viewed as soon as the video starts playing or a viewer starts watching a live broadcast - matching the way TikTok and Instagram already produce their counts.
The company said in a statement that the new system would remove confusion - previously it has used different criteria for different formats. Obviously, it's likely to result in a much-increased count for most longer videos, but the Google / Alphabet division says its original view metric, now under the title of 'Engaged views,' will still be available to creators through its Analytics tools.
The new approach will not change how creators earn, or thresholds for monetization through the YouTube Partner Program.
