Your DRNO Subscription will Remain Free
We are introducing an annual subscription fee for *new* readers, in about a month's time, but please note that we will not be asking *existing* readers to start paying and have no plans to do so in the future. Your free subscription is also portable to a new email address if you move. Please read on...
The paid subscription of $120 / £90 per annum will be introduced for those signing up from 1st December onwards. Paying members of our partner organisations signing up for DRNO after that may still have the fee waived, as well as certain other groups. In any case, only people who have said 'yes I will pay for it' will be charged.
Keeping and moving your free subscription- You do not need to do anything to keep it free, just continue to receive and read
- If you move email address, contact us on / before leaving (as usual, just reply to the news email itself - newsemails@ is monitored) and tell us the new address - depending on your requirements it can be swapped in immediately, or after a delay, or can even be doubled up so you receive DRNO on two addresses during a transition.
Note that until December 1st anyone can still sign up for free and they will be treated the same as an existing, non-paying subscriber.
Why are we doing this and why now?
We've actually had a good year for advertising and directory sales - the best for a while - so the existing model is working, and ads will remain the basis of our business. We've always felt that DRNO was worth a subscription fee, doing something no other publication does in providing fairly comprehensive coverage of industry news, and not just those who happen to send out press releases - a large proportion of our daily work is finding news. We get plenty of feedback to suggest that readers agree and regard it as more useful and informative than other free news publications in the sector.
The possibility of charging new readers has therefore been on the slate for a very long time, and with news and other media generally in such flux at the moment, and our other income doing well, it seems sensible to try it while the going's good.
Another reason: it's likely we'll employ a new News Writer / Editor in the next few months, in addition to current capacity. A new income stream at the same time, however small, seems a good idea.
One peripheral benefit might also be to remind people to resubscribe from a new address when they move jobs - it's surprising how many people tell us they 'just stopped getting them' and who then turn out to have moved company - almost as if they thought we'd know and make the change ourselves, even if we haven't covered their move in an article.
And lastly, it's frustrating that DRNO doesn't have a much bigger reader base, in terms of addresses signed up - and we know it is passed around companies once received and is sure to be passed around more once there's a cover price - but we actually think a fee acknowledges the premium product it is, and should help to boost subscriber numbers long-term. We'll see, and in any case...
Thank you
... for being a DRNO reader, for supporting and showing an interest in our ads / advertisers, for your great feedback which encourages us day-in, day-out to keep plugging away, and for spreading the word about the insight industry's global daily paper. Please keep doing all that!
