SMS Quizzes Athletics Fans

The UK's Sports Marketing Surveys (SMS) is conducting research for the European Athletic Association (EAA) via its global sports fan panel. The company has also announced the award of a market research grant to the CamToo project, which aims to build a river link between Cambridge city centre and Science Park.

The EAA survey is designed to uncover sports fans' attitudes to athletics, in order to help the EAA identify ways of attracting and retaining fans. EAA President Hansjörg Wirz explains that the company wants to gather data about 'what people do and don't like about our sport' in order to develop strategies to increase interest.

SMS will distribute a questionnaire to its Sporting Insights panel members, and the same questionnaire will also be displayed on the web sites of the EAA and its member federations.

The award for the CamToo project comes from the Sports Marketing Research Trust, set up by SMS to provide grants for non-profit sports organisations that wish to conduct market research. The aim of CamToo is extend the river Cam by one mile, providing a transport link between the city centre and the town's Science Park.

Previous recipients of SMS awards include the British Equestrian Federation, the British Gymnastics Association, the National Rounders Association, and the Golf Foundation.

Stephen Proctor, MD of SMS, says the Trust is 'attracting valuable new research projects which could not otherwise be seen'. He describes the CamToo project as 'particularly exciting and innovative, with the ability to have a real impact on one of Britain's most famous cities'.
